Closet Organization

Closet Organization

Do you catch yourself drooling over the well-organized closets you often see on magazine covers? Me too! Especially the ones in the photos that scream perfection!

Well, allow me to let you in on a little secret. Those well-organized closets in those photos are a mirage.

She said what?

People are not actually living and breathing in that space. It is just a glorious moment of organization heaven, but a moment that isn’t meant to last.

Think about the moments that precede the photo and envision a person taking out a sweater and not putting it back exactly the way it was. There goes perfect. But this is real life and I want to live in the real world.

We need to live in our spaces, not just occupy them. Sometimes that means with other people, and we can’t always control how they live within the same environment.

With that in mind, here is a key first step on how to live with a more functional closet space.

Eliminate: Take inventory of all the items you have in your closet. Have a few bins ready, labeled ‘Donate,’ ‘Keep,’ and ‘Throw away.’

How do I know what to get rid of?

1. If you have not worn the item within two years than get rid of it. This leaves some wiggle room if you have had a baby and/or trying to lose weight.

2. If it is to small let it go.

3. Do I have multiples of the same item, think about sharing with others?

4. Do I have items in my closet with the tag still on? If the item has been in the closet longer than two years with the tags still on than I can guarantee you probably have not thought about it too much. Forgotten in a sea of clothes! Sell, or donate this item.

5. If it is torn or hanging by threads it would be a good time to part ways. If there are memories attached to it take a photo of it. A photo takes up less space.

Throughout the year, I place unwanted items from my closet in a bag for my friend Alissa’s annual clothes swap. It’s a great and inexpensive way to refresh my wardrobe while helping others do the same.

Once your own elimination process is complete, you can see more clearly what you have and what you need. And it will become easier to organize the items that you keep. I can help you with the elimination process and show you how to implement new organizational systems designed to be more functional for you!

Remember: Not Perfect. Just functional. It is helpful to have an outside perspective about how to tell the difference.
