Organized Play Spaces

Transforming a kids play area for better flow and function.

Eliminating items, freeing up space in your home can give your family a well needed jump start. Are your kids complaining that they are bored? They have nothing to do. If So you may need to refresh your space with some purging and organization.

If you can set up an organized system for kids to create, they will be more likely to explore these types of materials. Whether they are crafting or building blocks, you can set up in an organized fashion so the kids can be more independent and do not need constant direction. This frees you up as a parent to make dinner or tend to other things. Checking In on occasion to remind children to put things away will help with the clean-up process.

To get you started!

1. Start by eliminating, sorting, purging.

When you eliminate items, do so when the kids are not around. If you do it while the kids are present, all of a sudden, a toy that has been buried in the back of the closet for 6 months becomes their most beloved possession. Everything becomes special to them. When everything is special, then nothing is special.

Depending on the age of the child it is important to get their input on certain matters like room arrangement and interests, but not necessarily on all matters.

When eliminating here are a few principles to follow which I often use when sorting.

2. Organization is not a one-time quick fix. In order to maintain your space, one must continuously revisit and observe your space to see what is working and what is not.

3. Simplify and don’t over-complicate kids’ storage. You don’t need to go out and buy 100 different storage bins to get started. Use what you have first by re purposing. As you eliminate you will find that you have bins or baskets you can reuse.

4. Build into your day or week a maintenance routine. Helping maintain your spaces prevents the space from getting out of control in which you can quickly feel overwhelmed.
